Activities Helper Job Description
BABSSCo runs courses for two sets of students at Harrow School - ‘B Course’ students,
aged 13-17, and ‘A Course’ students, aged 8-13. The requirements of the Activities
Helper job will vary depending on which age group you are assigned to. Some staff
are assigned to more than one group over the course of a summer. The following
information gives a general overview of the job. For more detailed information

English lessons generally take place in the mornings, with scheduled activities and excursions in the afternoons and evenings. EFL lessons are taught by qualified and experienced EFL teachers.
Each student participating in Harrow Summer School is placed under the supervision of a designated Course Leader, who is a senior and experienced member of staff. Many Course Leaders may already have worked as Activities Helper for a number of years. Activities Helpers are employed to assist and work alongside the Course Leaders to undertake the daily care and supervision of the students participating in the courses.
Main Roles and Responsibilities
- To assist the Course Leader in the smooth running of the course.
- To assist in the collection and transfer of students from London airports and rail termini.
- To accompany and supervise students on all on-site and off-site activities.
- To supervise and enforce student punctuality when required.
- To participate in activities when appropriate.
- To perform office duties and other general duties as directed and required by the Course Leader or Course Director. All staff are required to be cooperative and flexible. During the period of employment, you must be contactable by mobile at
all times.
- You will be issued with the handouts given to students in order that you may familiarise yourself with what is expected of them and can help us to enforce the rules. It is essential that you know what is and is not permitted as far as students are concerned.

Residential Duties
Staff who are accommodated on site may be required to assist House Parents with overnight residential supervision duties in the Boarding House (for additional pay). The main responsibilities of the residential supervisor are as follows:
- Ensure that the House Parent knows where to find you
- Support the House Parent as follows:
- Supervise students during the evening and night-time period when necessary
- Ensure night-time discipline of students
- Ensure students are ready for bed and in their own rooms by the agreed curfew time
- Assist the House Parent with any emergency

| Hours of Work |
Generally, working hours will span the period 07:30-21:00. However, a large degree of flexibility is expected. A staff rota is posted in the Course Office detailing daily and weekly work schedules for each member of staff. Regular time off will be given during the working week. A maximum of 60 hours work per week is anticipated, although this may vary from week to week. |

Paid Holiday Entitlement will be given during the period of employment at the rate of one day for every week worked. Holiday dates will be determined in advance by the Course Director. |

It is the post holder’s responsibility to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact and to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to the Head of Department or the School’s Child Protection Officer. |
