EFL Teacher Job Description
BABSSCo runs courses for two sets of students at Harrow School - ‘B Course’ students, aged 13-17, and ‘A Course’ students, aged 10-12. These groups are taught separately, have their own resources and are based in different centres, each with its own Director of Studies.
English lessons generally take place in the mornings, with scheduled activities and excursions in the afternoons and evenings. EFL teachers are not responsible for activities outside scheduled lesson times, although they are welcome to participate as much as they feel able to.
The following information gives a general overview of the job. For more detailed information please contact BABSSCo Head Office on enterprises@harrowschool.org.uk
Main Roles and Responsibilities
Teachers are expected to be able to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and to plan and execute lessons that are stimulating and relevant to students’ ages, needs and interests. The aim of our courses is primarily to develop and extend students’ listening and speaking skills. They are also expected to monitor their students closely and to be prepared to adapt their lessons to suit students’ progress.
All teachers are involved in the entry testing procedure. Students are then placed according to their levels; class sizes are a maximum of 16 students but generally speaking average out at 12 per class. Some team teaching may be arranged but on the whole teachers have ‘their’ own class for the duration of that course.
We expect our teachers to be inventive and progressive in their ideas. The ability to work in a team is essential.
Residential Duties
Staff who are accommodated on site may be required to perform overnight residential supervision duties in the Boarding House (for additional pay). Although the burden of this responsibility tends to fall on the Activities Helpers, we are always keen to hear from teachers who would like to be more involved in this area. The main responsibilities of the residential supervisor are as follows:
- Supervise students during the night-time period. You are responsible for general student welfare during the night
- Ensure night-time discipline of students
- Ensure students are ready for bed and in their own rooms by the night-time curfew
- Co-operate with other Residential Staff members and assist where necessary
- Co-ordinate students’ weekly laundry collection and redistribution
- Assist the Course Director with Fire Drills
